The climate of Le Marche is perfect for grape vines and wine! Hence why, when driving around Le Marche you will frequently come across many different vineyards and cantinas. Getting wine from a cantina in Italy is a whole experience in itself. It is served to you directly through a petrol pump! Get yourself a 5 litre bottle of great quality wine for under 10 euros!

With many of the wines containing no added sulfites, it’s no wonder that it’s such a norm for a bottle of wine to be present on both the lunch and dinner table in Le Marche. Wine is very much part of Italian culture, with people drinking it for pure enjoyment and as an accompaniment to a meal rather than how it is often drunk in other parts of Europe (people drinking to get smashed). In fact, Italians drink wine also for health purposes, as it contains many antioxidants and promotes longevity. Find out more about the wine harvest in this blog.

Sweet wine

Vino cotto! This is a dessert wine, special to Le Marche. It is made mainly by local vineyard owners who heat up some wine in their homes/cantinas, and turn it into a rich, almost port-like drink. There is always lively competition between friends as to who can make the best vino cotto. This is also a staple digestif served at the end of a meal, often along with other classic options such as grappa and limoncello.

Wine Tasting

When in Le Marche, I would definitely recommend dedicating an afternoon or evening to a wine tasting. Many cantinas offer this experience for a great price. The wines are often accompanied with some delicious local specialty foods and nibbles. Service is usually great and they always make sure you leave feeling very happy and satisfied.
